Hugh Jackman Exits Brewing Broadway Musical ‘Houdini’ | Variety
Hugh Jackman has stepped away from the upcoming Broadway musical “Houdini,” citing the scheduling demands of developing a new tuner as the cause of his departure from a project to which he’s been attached, both formally and informally, for several years now. “I have greatly enjoyed the collaborative process on ‘Houdini,’” the actor said in a statement. “Ultimately, though, I wasn’t able to commit to the time this role will require. Looking Back: Joey Picks 10 Best Performances by an Actor in 2013 | FirstShowing.net
The year is almost over folks, and with that brings the deluge of lists that we all look forward to reading and agreeing/disagreeing with from fellow cinephiles. For my part, I'm delivering a two-part look at the Best Performances of 2013, split up between performances from actors and actresses. This was a year full of performances to rave about, so I'm thrilled to be able to give my personal favorites a moment in the sun, starting with just the actors here in this first part. From relative newcomers like Will Forte to old veterans like Bruce Dern (both in the same movie), wherever you looked, there was someone giving a performance for the ages, and it was a pleasure to watch all of them on the big screen throughout this year.

Even among the multi-million dollar contracts doled out by the Hollywood execs like Christmas candy, there are still a few bargains left. Emma Stone finished at the top of Forbes' 2013 List of the Best Actors for the Buck, having earned studios $80.70 for each $1 they paid her over her last three films.
Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" has been polarizing audiences who have seen the movie in advance of its Christmas theatrical opening.
'Wolf of Wall Street' at the academy: What really happened - latimes.com
As we've exhaustively reported, the motion picture academy is on the older side. The average age of eligible Oscar voters is now 63. And as much as we'd like to picture these people as open-minded and artistically adventurous, reality just keeps slapping us in the face. To put it another way: We want to picture academy members as being like this guy when, in some cases, they're more like him.

Instead of starting production afresh, Universal is weighing options for Fast and Furious 7 using their investment to complete production while giving Walkers character a respectful exit.

The recent death of the charismatic FF7 hero Paul Walker triggered this move of the production house, Universal Studios. The optimum thing would be to use those scenes and re-work the story to give Walker’s character a respectful exit.

Black women are underrepresented in front of and behind the camera in movies and TV.
Where are the black women in Hollywood?
Last week marked the beginning of the awards season frenzy, as nominations for theScreen Actors Guild Awards and Golden Globes were announced. Yet, there was one important group that made a poor showing among the roster of talented nominees: black women. While Oprah Winfrey (The Butler) and Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave) both picked up supporting actress SAG nominations (and Nyong'o grabbed another from the Golden Globes), they are the lone black women on a list of lily-white female film nominees.

Darabont and his CAA agents claim they are owed "tens of millions of dollars" from TV's top-rated drama. "AMC’s conduct toward Frank to date has been nothing short of atrocious," his lawyer tells THR.
Fired 'Walking Dead' Creator Frank Darabont Sues AMC for Profits
Ousted The Walking Dead creator Frank Darabont has slapped AMC with a bombshell lawsuit alleging that the cable channel breached his contract and deprived him of tens of millions of dollars in profits from the hit series by making a sweetheart deal licensing the show to itself.
OUR EDITOR RECOMMENDS
The suit, filed Tuesday in New York state court and obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, hints that a standoff over Darabont’s profit participation, which has been brewing since February 2011, might in part explain his abrupt dismissal in July of that year, only weeks into production of Walking Dead's second season and two days after he had appeared at Comic-Con to promote the show. AMC never explained the firing publicly or, according to the suit, to Darabont himself.
“AMC’s conduct toward Frank to date has been nothing short of atrocious," Darbont's lead lawyerDale Kinsella tells THR. "Unfortunately, the fans ofThe Walking Dead have suffered as well by being deprived of his creative talent."
THR has reached out to an AMC spokesperson for comment and will update with a response.

Next Year's Screenplay Nominees? - NYTimes.com
Among the tightest contests in this season’s highly competitive Oscar race are the screenplay categories. For original stories, will the Academy favor ones based on fact, like “American Hustle,” “Inside Llewyn Davis” and “Dallas Buyers Club,” or wholly invented cinema, like the romance “Her”? On the adapted side, will voters go with historical epics like “12 Years a Slave” or reward long character arcs, as in “Before Midnight”? The Bagger will investigate, ponder and pontificate.
In the meantime, you can get a jump on future hopefuls with the just-releasedBlack List, the annual survey of the best unproduced scripts circulating in Hollywood. Films like “Argo,” “Margin Call,” “The Descendants” and “The King’s Speech” once made the list, before jumping to the big screen.

In response, Sweetpea brought counterclaims, arguing that it still retained rights from a 1994 deal and that Hasbro couldn't license Universal Pictures to make a D&D film. In August, a judge denied Sweetpea's summary judgment motion, saying it was "premature" to settle the score at an early juncture.
