CNN and NBC Scrap Projects on Hillary Clinton (October 1, 2013)
A third biographical portrayal of Mrs. Clinton — this one a feature film focused on her years as a young lawyer during the Watergate era — has been quietly inching forward, and promising fresh dilemmas for both its subject and for those who are bent on making her a big-screen star.
Titled “Rodham,” the film would be based on a well-regarded script by a screenwriter named Young Il Kim, and is set to be directed by James Ponsoldt, who scored something of an indie hit in August with his teenage romance “The Spectacular Now.”
“Rodham” is considerably more personal than the proposed CNN documentary about the mature Mrs. Clinton, or the NBC mini-series that was to have starred Diane Lane. Both networks abandoned the projects on Monday. A new draft of the “Rodham” script, due shortly, is supposed to play up the romance between a 20-something Hillary Rodham and the charming future president from Hope, Ark., Bill Clinton.
