Space on White, which rents artists' studios, rehearsal and performance spaces at its 81 White St. location, said Tuesday that it will cease to operate at the end of the month. It will instead rent its space, the equivalent of four studios, to a tenant who had previously occupied just one: Jemz, which offers classes in sewing, arts and crafts. It is a further blow to arts organizations in TriBeCa, with the nearby Dance New Amsterdam recently announcing plans to close its studios and performance center at Broadway and Chambers Street.
Space on White was founded in 2009 by the actress Chasten Harmon to give emerging artists access to studio space in Manhattan. It owns the first floor and basement of the six-floor building at White Street. Its four studios—about 3,000 square feet total—could be rented for any artistic purpose. "We wanted to have a space outside of Midtown, outside of the noise and crowds," said Ms. Harmon. The studio, she added, was meant to create "a place that could be a home for them and could be a resource."
