The film is about two young boys who are left to fend for themselves when their mothers are taken away by the authorities, and Jordin said it was an emotionally draining ride.
Speaking at the premiere, which closed the Hollywood Black Film Festival, Jordin said: "It was really dark in the script, they had to lighten it up a little bit because it was really heavy.
"At the end of the script when I read it for the first time, I thought, how is anybody going to get through this? My chest was heavy, I was crying. I haven't seen it yet but I know I'm going to need tissues."
Despite the tragic subject matter, the Sparkle actress said she hopes audiences find the movie uplifting.
