The 'Fifty Shades of Grey' Script Needs Some Work: Report - The Moviefone Blog
The "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie, already scrambling in the wake of star Charlie Hunnam's abrupt departure this weekend, has hit yet another snag. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script is undergoing some major work only weeks before production is set to begin.
Oscar-nominated screenwriter Patrick Marber ("Notes on a Scandal") has been tapped "to do a polish and character work on the script," reports THR, though Marber was hired before Hunnam announced he was leaving the project. Marber previously worked with "Fifty Shades" director Sam Taylor-Johnson on a short film called "Love You More."
While the production appears to be a bit of a mess at this point, sources tell THR that Marber's polish of writer Kelly Marcel's screenplay is "standard" procedure in Hollywood, and that "the script is ready for a November start date, should the studio be able to find a new leading man in time." Of course, that last bit is the biggest hurdle facing the project at the moment, and THR points out that many people are wondering whether it was Marcel's work that made Hunnam jump ship in the first place.
Meanwhile, actors on the short list to replace Hunnam include Jamie Dornan (UK series "The Fall") and Alexander Skarsgard ("True Blood"), as well as those originally considered for the role: Theo James ("Divergent") and Christian Cooke ("Romeo and Juliet").
