Weekend Box Office: 'Thor: The Dark World' Conquers Midgard - Forbes
As is sometimes the case, the big box office news happened not in America but over the rest of the world. While Ender’s Game handedly topped the US box office (more on that later), the big new release was the overseas release of Disney and Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World. The superhero sequel debuted in 36 major overseas markets, beginning its roll-out on Wednesday and going wider on Friday. This is a similar pattern to pretty much every Marvel studios release going back toIron Man 2 back in late-April 2010. As such,Thor: The Dark World earned a rock-solid $109.4 million since debuting on Wednesday, with $5.2m on 136 IMAX screens (about $40,000 per screen). That’s obviously quite a bit lower than the $195m posted by Iron Man 3‘s overseas debut and the $185m overseas opening of The Avengers, but it’s higher than the $100m debut of Iron Man 2 and the $99m debut of Iron Man.
